This September 28, we wear orange! This year, HWDSB will be observing Orange Shirt Day: A Day to Remember Children Taken to Residential Schools on Friday, September 28. Orange Shirt Day has been declared an annual day to honour the lives and survivors of Canada’s Residential Schools. The Residential School system was put in place by the Canadian government. Children were forcefully taken from their families to church-led residential schools, where Indigenous language and culture was forbidden and punished. Many children died, and families still face intergenerational affects caused by the Residential School era. The last residential school closed in Saskatchewan in 1996. We wear orange to honour the survivors and lives of residential schools.
